How to Prepare for Your First Chiropractic Appointment

Going for an appointment anywhere new can feel a little bit unsettling, whether it’s a visit to a dentist, doctor or even an appointment with a hairstylist. This is even more so when you have an appointment with a chiropractor for the first time since you might not be sure what to expect.

You could have even googled what chiropractors do and found some shocking videos, half-truths, and myths about chiropractic care. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your first chiropractic appointment.

1.    Get the necessary documents ready

Gather all necessary documents the day before your appointment to avoid stressing yourself or rushing at the last minute. These documents could include your insurance and identification card, medical records, a written or mental list of your medical history, and your payment form. Most insurance policies offer coverage for chiropractic care, but you may need to check with your provider beforehand to be safe.

2.    Dress comfortably

Unless something unexpected happens, your first appointment will include a chiropractic adjustment. This means you will be lying on a table, sometimes facing up or down, so it’s crucial to wear something flexible.

While it’s rare for your local chiropractor to ask you to remove clothes, comfortable, moveable clothes will be helpful in case they need to perform an X-ray, imaging, or any other treatment that will require adjusting clothing.

For ladies, sports bras, tennis shoes or flats, and loose-fitting slacks or t-shirts are the most comfortable choice. The most comfortable clothes for men are tennis shoes and loose-fitting athletic clothing, such as t-shirts and sweatpants.

3.    Arrive early

As with any medical appointment, there will be some paperwork to complete, such as a new patient form, insurance form and contact form. Since most clinics operate on an appointment basis, it’s courteous and important to arrive at least 15 minutes earlier to allow yourself time to complete any needed paperwork and still be on time for the appointment. Arriving on time will also help the clinic keep to the schedule so that you don’t miss your scheduled time and end up waiting much longer.

4.    Be ready to articulate your pain

Your first chiropractic appointment is your chance to give an in-depth description of your problem, including how it started, how long you have had the pain, and what you have been taking to ease it. Be honest and transparent with your doctor, as this will help you get the appropriate diagnosis and enjoy the full benefit of the treatment.

5.    Be prepared to ask questions

Chances are that your chiropractor will make a treatment plan for you, but make sure you understand and ask questions before you leave. You should not have any left questions about chiropractic care by your second appointment. It’s also a good idea to book your next appointment before you leave and record it on your phone so you won’t forget.
